Authored by Stephen Halliday, An Underground Guide to Sewers was published by Thames & Hudson in October 2019. The book was fore-worded by Sir Peter Bazalgette, the great-great son of Sir Joseph Bazalgette, a 19th-century English civil engineer whose major achievement was the creation of the sewer network for central London that rid the city of cholera epidemics, and cleansed the River Thames.

The subject may seem odd but as designers we are fascinated about what makes the modern city what it is today and how his subject reveals all of the relationships, social etiquette and ingenuity of the people who made them.

The design and typography is based on the utilitarian modernist design, in particular first examples of information graphics that were rooted in rationality and the process of displaying information in a clear and organised manner. A leading influence on these style of these was by Ladislav Sutnar. The colour palette represents the very dank and dark world of the underground sewer tunnels. The font on the cover is our own Bourgeois.
