Rankin: Play

Published in 2020 by Rizzoli International, Rankin: Play draws exclusively on Rankin’s archive of photographs of the biggest names in contemporary music. Divided by themes such as Heroes and My Generation, Play collects two hundred of Rankin’s favourite images of the most influential artists of the last three decades. Those included range from David Bowie and Elton John to Pharrell, the Spice Girls, Grimes, and Bjork. Alongside the photos are anecdotes from Rankin and the artists themselves on the reciprocal relationship between photographer and subject and the cultural value of pop music. The typography utilises a different custom arrowhead for each letter A throughout the book to simply represent the act of pressing play on a music device but also to represent the relentless push forward to the future and negation of the immediate past that pop music seems to represent. All of the body text is set in italic capitals to further symbolise this dynamic headlong push forwards.
